Sports are a fan's vehicle for a vicarious experience of physical competition. Shouldn't we have a say in some rule changes?
Without further ado, a change to the Big Four to improve the game:
NBA
Widen the Court
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a professional basketball player to keep his feet in bounds on a corner three. A wider court encourages spacing and new offensive tactics that rely less on isolation plays and more timing based, cutting offenses. A change that would go into effect in conjunction with the widened court would change the defensive three seconds call would be expanded to four seconds as a wider court necessitates more help defense.
MLB
Teams Must Bunt at Least Twice per Game
With the inflated run environment created by the designated hitter, add some strategy to the game by choosing when and how to apply the bunt. This rule change opens the door for more strategy in a game where there seems to be few places for a manager to meaningfully impart his will. Bat handling ability takes a relative prime seat once again.
NFL
Change the Contact Zone for WR/DBs From 5 Yards to 8 Yards Downfield
Passing is already getting out of hand and will only get worse as the league gets mad with the influx of casual fans and bends the game to the whims of "excitement". Keep physicality in football and make strength a more necessary component or receiver play. This change would decrease the number of back breaking penalties.
NHL
Play Every December Game Outside
The Winter Classic draws viewership from across the nation and is often of intrigue to non hockey fans. Having players play in the elements would be an exciting change for the game in a one-month affair akin to the NFL's Breast Cancer Awareness month.
